I saw a polka dot manicure on Short n’ Chic recently that I liked a lot, so I tried it out myself. It required buying a bottle of OPI’s My Boyfriend Scales Walls to use as the base, but I had been considering that anyway so it provided a good excuse.
OPI’s My Boyfriend Scales Walls is a very light grey that actually looks white most of the time. Because it’s not a pure white, though, it applies well and only takes two coats to be opaque. It’s not chalky or streaky. It came out with the Spiderman Collection and I didn’t pay any attention at the time, but so many people have been using it as a base for nail art that I finally decided to give it a chance, and it’s great. It’s also on clearance at my Ulta, so it was even on sale!
So I started with two coats of My Boyfriend Scales Walls and then used OPI’s The Spy Who Loved Me and China Glaze’s Mistletoe Kisses for the dots. The Spy Who Loved Me is just shimmery enough to echo the sparkle in Mistletoe Kisses. I really like how Mistletoe Kisses has a soft, minty feel. Now that I pulled it out (it’s from 2010), I’m thinking of wearing it as a full manicure. It’s so sparkly in person!
This is my first dotting attempt, and I think I can do better with a bit more practice. I liked this combination and how in-your-face holiday it is; it’s not delicate or subtle. It makes me think of candy!
OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls is probably still available at some Ultas and salons, and The Spy Who Loved Me is from the Skyfall Collection and should still be around. Mistletoe Kisses is from China Glaze’s 2010 holiday collection, but you can still find it online.
Hi Laura,
I was looking at the OPI polka dot nails and I found them adorable! I believe you used an Array tool – or something. It looks like your keyboard got stuck on array so it was difficult to read. Anyway, I just wanted you to know someone out there appreciates your pretty nails. ?
